Clare Meyer celebrates her 100th birthday at the Convent of St. Helena, Augusta GA, on November 27th, 2007
On November 24th, a party was held at the Convent of St. Helena in Augusta GA to honor Clare Meyer, who would turn 100 on the following Tuesday. The party was well attended, and the toasts were an opportunity for many to express their love and appreciation of Clare. The photo at right was reproduced on her birthday cake, and shows Clare with her young friend, Eben.

On the actual day of her birthday, Tuesday November 27th, the sisters and staff of the convent treated Clare to a special luncheon. During the meal, a staff member from the office of the Mayor of Augusta appeared at our table, and presented Clare with the following declaration:
PROCLAMATION
IN RECOGNITION OF "SISTER CLARE"
WHEREAS, Sister Clare was born and raised in New Orleans, Louisana on November 27, 1907 and is therefore imbued with its unique culture as well as the spirit of generosity and hospitality; and
WHEREAS, Sister Clare is a pioneer among women, earning a Master's Degree in Social Work from Tulane University in 1930; and then serving both as a volunteer at her church and as a medical social worker at Charity Hospital in New Orleans during the Post-Depression period, working with the poor and underprivileged for almost twenty-five years; and
WHEREAS, in 1953, she became a sister in the Order of St. Helena to continue her life of prayer and service; and
WHEREAS, she has lived in the City of augusta since 1962; and through collecting cancelled postage stamps, S&H Green Stamps, pennies, and finding countless other ways of attracting donations and money, she contributed significantly toward the building of the Augusta Convent of St. Helena; and
WHEREAS, she was active in the ministry of Pastoral Care at St. Joseph's Hospital for many years, offering comfort and solace to countless people waiting for their loved ones to undergo surgery; and
WHEREAS, she is known and loved by women, men, and children all over the City of Augusta and far beyond who join today in celebrating her 100th birthday; and
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Deke Copenhaver, Mayor of the City of Augusta, do hereby proclaim November 27, 2007, as "SISTER CLARE DAY" in Augusta, Georgia, and urge all citizens to applaud the efforts of this wonderful woman and thank her for all that she is doing and has done in our community and for its people.
