Newburgh Peace Project

In the first week – long before we knew what our play was going to be about – we started painting swirling colors on long rolls of paper and on thick cardboard under the direction of Patrick Wadden of Arm of the Sea, a professional theater company. It was so fun, absorbing and energizing! Something new was coming but what exactly it would be, no one knew. Then, by the third week or so we leaped into creating our color tribes of pint-size, Charlie Brown- headed figures!

You can see that our group included adults and young people, and how we worked side by side from the beginning to form our community called the Newburgh Peace Project. Many of the people you see are from the Muslim community in Newburgh, which itself is very diverse and has people from many different countries in it. Some of the young people in these shots are Latinos that do not yet speak English or are bi-lingual; some are African Americans and some are from bi-racial families. These pictures were taken at St. George’s Episcopal Church in Newburgh. One of the pictures is of Mother Deborah Dresser, the vicar.
