Mary and Martha

About My Icons

I work in egg tempera and gold leaf on gessoed wood in the ancient form of iconography, and I also attempt to adapt this craft to modern and Anglican spirituality.

My icons include women and men saints not included in the orthodox canon of iconography and women who have been traditionally depicted in subservient roles. For example, in "writing" an icon of Saint Mary Magdalene, I attempted to depict her not as the penitent harlot but rather as the Apostle to the Apostles. I have presented Mary and Martha both in conversation with Jesus, rather than placing Martha in the background.

My icons also include modern men and women of the Anglican and Episcopal Church, such as The Rev. Li Tim-Oi, the first woman to be ordained to the priesthood in the Anglican Communion.

Icon Commissions

Writing icons is a spiritual practice for me, and I accept commissions in exchange for a donation to the Order of Saint Helena. Please contact me directly for more information.
