Home page | Programs at the Vails Gate Convent
Street address:
701 Blooming Grove Turnpike
New Windsor, NY 12553
Take the Short Line bus from Port Authority bus station to Vails Gate. Ask the driver to let you off across the street from the Key Bank. Do not cross the street. There is pay phone on the corner, if you need to call us. If possible, let us know ahead of time which bus you are taking, so that we can meet you. Tell the driver where you want to get off, as they do not always call the stop.
ARRIVAL BY AIR
From Newark, LaGuardia, or JFK airports: Go to the Port Authority bus station and follow the directions for arrival by bus from New York City.
From the Newburgh (Stewart) Airport: Let us know your flight number and arrival time. Most of the time we can meet your plane. Occasionally we may ask you to take a taxi.
DIRECTIONS BY CAR:
FROM THE SOUTH
Take I-87 (the NY Thruway) north to Exit 16, the Harriman exit. There is a 50 cent toll at the exit. Keep to the right as you approach the toll booths. Go to the light and turn right on Route 32. (NB: there is an entrance to the Woodbury Common shopping mall before the light. Do not turn there. But if you should find yourself in the mall, go on to the next exit from the mall and turn right there.) Drive about 12 miles to the Vails Gate 5-Corners, which is a large and complex intersection. Here make a HARD right onto Route 94. (Note that Route 32 also bends a bit to the right.) Go though the next traffic light at Forge Hill Road. Then we are the first driveway on the right. (If you miss Route 94 and continue on Route 32, go on to the second light after the 5-Corners, turn right, then left at the next light and right into our driveway.)
FROM THE EAST
Take I-84 west until you cross the bridge over the Hudson River. As soon as you come over the bridge take Exit 10S (NOT 10N), which is marked "Newburgh" and "New Paltz". Loop around to your right until you come to a forced turn at Route 9W. Turn right and follow Route 9W through Newburgh. You will cross a little bridge, then come to a traffic light. There is a cemetery on the corner and the right lane forces you to turn right onto Route 94. Once on Route 94, it is a little under 3 miles. You will go through one traffic light, then the road will do a but of turning, but just stay on Route 94. On your left you will see a sign for McQuade Foundation for Children, then at the end of a stone wall there is a street called "Rocky Lane", and just beyond that (on the left) is the service entrance to our property. If you miss that turn, continue on Route 94, because the main entrance is farther down the road. If you go through a traffic light, you have gone too far and need to turn around.
FROM THE WEST
Take I-84 east to Exit 6 (Route 17K). Turn right onto Route 17K. Go to a big intersection with Route 300. There turn right. Follow directions from the intersection of Route 17K and Route 300.
FROM THE NORTH VIA I-87
Take the NY Thruway (I-87) south to Newburgh (Exit 17). At the exit turn right onto Route 17K. Get in the left lane and at the first light turn left onto Route 300. Follow directions from the intersection of Route 17K and Route 300.
FROM THE NORTH VIA ROUTE 9W
See directions from the East.
FROM THE INTERSECTION OF ROUTE 17K AND ROUTE 300
Follow Route 300 to a T intersection, where Route 300 takes a left turn. Stay on Route 300 (i.e. take the left turn.). At the second traffic light after the turn, turn left. (This is Union Ave., and you will see a deli on the corner, and after you turn you will pass the Y on your right.) At the next traffic light turn right onto Route 32, southbound. Go under a railroad overpass and to the next traffic light. There turn left onto Forge Hill Road. Then turn left again at the next light onto Route 94. Turn in at the first driveway on your right, where you should see our sign.
FROM THE NORTHEAST
Get to I-84 any way you like. You can pick it up out of Boston, but that takes you through cities. Or you can come over the Massachusetts Turnpike to the Taconic Parkway or I-91, then south to westbound I-84. (If the weather is good, the Taconic Parkway has wonderful views.) Then follow directions from the East.
FROM NORTHWESTERN NEW YORK AND CENTRAL PENNSYLVANIA
Take I-81 to westbound I-84. Follow directions from the West.
FROM WESTCHESTER COUNTY AND NEARBY AREAS
Take I-287 toward the Tappan Zee Bridge. I-287 merges with I-87 (the NY Thruway) northbound and then crosses the Tappan Zee bridge. There is no toll for the bridge going in this direction. Once across the bridge, follow directions from the South.
FROM NEW JERSEY
Come north on whichever of the Garden State Parkway, the Palisades Parkway, Route 17 and I-287 is most convenient and turn onto I-87 (the NY Thruway) northbound. Follow directions from the South.
FROM MANHATTAN
Cross the George Washington Bridge on the upper level. Take the first exit onto the Palisades Parkway. Exit onto I-87 (the NY Thruway) northbound. Then follow directions from the South.
